The Shifting Power report
This research was commissioned by the London Anti-Racism Collaboration for Health (LARCH) and Thrive LDN to investigate the relationship between structural racism and mental health. The work draws on a literature review, an intervention mapping exercise, and workshops with people who have lived experience of these issues.
The report provides several insights into the systemic nature of racial inequality:
Racism functions as a constant stressor that damages mental health throughout every life stage.
Clinical care alone is insufficient to address the social and economic conditions that shape health.
The current political environment and experiences of overt racism are increasing fear and trauma for many communities.
Discrimination and a lack of cultural sensitivity often lead to unequal access to early support.
